In een vorig artikel ("Google laat Systran vallen en kiest resoluut voor eigen vertaalsysteem") meldden we dat het Amerikaanse internetzoekbedrijf Google geen gebruik meer maakt van de automatische vertaaltechnologie (MT) van de Franse marktleider Systran. Google gebruikt voortaan enkel nog de eigen technologie.
De automatische vertaaltechnologie van Google lijkt slechts in beperkte mate gebaseerd op grammaticale en syntactische regels en is grotendeels corpusgebaseerd. De corpora zijn in hoofdzaak gealigneerde tweetalige teksten die door menselijke vertalers zijn vertaald. Groot potentieel lijkt het systeem vooral te halen uit zijn vermogen om autonoom te leren aan de hand van statistische analyse en beter te worden naarmate het met meer tweetalig tekstmateriaal wordt gevoed.
Over de resultaten die automatische vertaaltechnologie produceert, doen zowel leken als taalkundigen graag schamper. Vaak levert de vertaalcomputer inderdaad hilarische vertalingen af.
Wij laten de belangstellende lezer aan de hand van de onderstaande vertalingen zelf oordelen.
Wij stuurden het artikel ‘Vertalingen objectief evalueren’ van 16 mei 2007 naar de vertaalcomputers van Google, Systran en SDL.
Vervolgens analyseerden we kort het resultaat van Google en pasten we onze brontekst enigszins aan in functie van de vaststellingen.
De lezer begrijpt dat noch de analyse noch de aanpassingen aan de brontekst grondig, laat staan wetenschappelijk mogen worden genoemd.

Het was natuurlijk leuk geweest als jullie toch even hadden aangegeven welk "inzicht" jullie gebruikt hebben voor de wijzigingen aan de tekst. Sommige wijzigingen zijn subtiel en heel effectief (werkwoordsvolgorde), andere maken er een tekst van die zó niet meer bruikbaar is in het Nederlands: teveel korte zinnen. En dat was misschien niet eens echt nodig geweest, meer komma's plaatsen helpt vaak ook al .. (Maarten Jansonius)
