ECWS 2025 (Extended Semantic Web Conference)

zondag, 01 juni 2025 - donderdag, 05 juni 2025
Portorož, Slovenië
The Extended Semantic Web Conference is a major venue for discussing the latest scientific results and technology innovations around semantic technologies.

Building on its past success, ESWC is seeking to broaden its focus to span other relevant related research areas in which Web semantics plays an important role.

'The goal of the Semantic Web is to create a Web of knowledge and services in which the semantics of content is made explicit and content is linked to both other content and services allowing novel applications to combine content from heterogeneous sites in unforeseen ways and support enhanced matching between users needs and content. This network of knowledge-based functionality will weave together a large network of human knowledge, and make this knowledge machine-processable to support intelligent behaviour by machines. Creating such an interlinked Web of knowledge which spans unstructured text, structured data as well as multimedia content and services requires the collaboration of many disciplines, including but not limited to: Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing, Databases and Information Systems, Information Retrieval, Machine Learning, Multimedia, Distributed Systems, Social Networks, Web Engineering, and Web Science.'

For more information, please visit the ESWC conference website.

Symposium: PSI Standards and Training for the Asylum and Reception Sector - Insights from the EU-WEBPSI Project

donderdag, 05 juni 2025
13:00 - 18:00
Gent, België
'When arriving in a new country, effective communication in the initial stage is one of the main tools to achieve integration in that country. A newcomer will obviously not immediately be able to master the local language, which is why the services of a public service interpreter play an important role in this initial stage. Practices of how interpreters can be and are employed in such settings differ widely across Europe, and there is no European framework of minimal standards for public service interpreting (PSI) yet. This causes unequal access to basic services across the EU. An additional challenge for newcomers is the mismatch between interpreter supply and demand: speakers from languages of lesser diffusion (LLDs) are often excluded from access to essential services due to insufficient interpreters in their languages.'

To tackle these challenges, the EU-WEBPSI project aimed at:
  • Developing minimum standards to guarantee high-quality language support and equal access to basic services for newcomers across the EU;
  • Facilitating access to interpreting services by offering remote solutions that are more adapted to contemporary needs;
  • Increasing the interpreting capacity for LLDs to make sure that more newcomers have access to essential language services and to empower the speakers of these languages.

For more information about the end-of-project symposium, please visit the EU-WEBPSI website.

15th International Symposium on Bilingualism (ISB15)

maandag, 09 juni 2025 - vrijdag, 13 juni 2025
San Sebastian, Gipuzkoa, Spanje
The International Symposium on Bilingualism (ISB) is a biennial conference on a wide range of issues concerning bi/multilingualism. Since its inaugural conference in 1997 at Newcastle University, ISB has become the most significant conference in the field of bi/multilingualism.

ISB has a strong focus on showcasing multidisciplinary research with a representation from a range of disciplines at every conference, including education, linguistics, neuroscience, psychology and sociology.

The aim of ISB is to bring together bi/multilingualism researchers from all around the globe to advance the theoretical and applied research in bi/multilingualism, and to support bi/multilingualism practices in the community.

The theme of the 15th International Symposium on Bilingualism (ISB15) is 'The Different Faces of Bilingualism', a deliberately broad theme, aimed at creating a space for researchers working on different faces of bilingualism, including different research areas, methodological approaches, and populations.

'In line with this aim, we have invited plenary speakers who represent different faces of bilingualism, from sociolinguistics to education, psycholinguistics to translation.'

This broad theme reflects the multidisciplinary nature of the organizing committee, based in a center of excellence for neuroscientific research into language and bilingualism.
To capitalize on this expertise, ISB15 will feature The Bilingual Brain Day, which is intended to share the core insights of the field with researchers of other areas and to discuss the state-of-the-art with researchers in the field.
The conference theme also aims to promote inclusivity, inspired by its location in the Spanish Basque Country, one of the few regions in the world that has successfully revived its bilingual heritage across all aspects of society.

For more information, please see the conference website.

donderdag, 12 juni 2025 - vrijdag, 13 juni 2025
Groningen, Nederland
This conference explores the intersections of language, technology, and society.

'In today’s world, marked by rapid technological advancements, social transformations, and global challenges, linguistics plays a pivotal role in understanding how we connect with our environment.

The theme for TABU Dag 2025, 'Linguistics in a Fast-Changing Society,' reflects the power of language in shaping and being shaped by communication, technology, and social interaction. With the rise of digital platforms, artificial intelligence, and the need for responsive communication, our understanding of language is evolving faster than ever before.'

Purity in Minoritised Languages (Conference)

donderdag, 19 juni 2025 - zaterdag, 21 juni 2025
Flensburg, Duitsland
'A key issue in the study of language policy and planning is to describe – theoretically and practically – the language to be promoted or protected.

This often presupposes an essentialist perspective of language: languages are seen to exist as uniform or mono-dimensional entities. It is considered possible to determine what counts and does not count as part of a particular language, with sociolinguistic variation considered to be disturbing and language contact seen as potentially damaging.

Notions of purity are invoked implicitly or explicitly to distinguish between what is core to a language and what is peripheral.

What appears uncontroversial in everyday life is highly problematic in the systemic and social study of linguistics.'

This conference seeks to delve deeper into the fundamental nature of this problem by focusing on minoritized and minority languages.

4th International Conference on Multilingual digital terminology today. Design, representation formats and management systems (MDTT 2025)

donderdag, 19 juni 2025 - vrijdag, 20 juni 2025
Thessaloniki, Griekenland
This conference brings together specialists in the disciplines of terminology, terminography, computational terminology, specialized lexicography, computational linguistics, Machine Learning, NLP and Knowledge Representation in order to share methodological reflections on design approaches, representation formats and management systems of the digital terminology collected in the terminological resources.

'The professional responsible for designing and populating terminological resources is the terminographer. Producing new terminological resources requires eclectic research skills. The design and implementation phases involve a thorough preliminary analysis of the information needs of the potential user and an accurate assessment of the structural requirements of the resource.

At the same time, the use of ontologies and knowledge graphs is becoming increasingly important in terminology management, particularly with the integration of advanced Machine Learning (ML) and Large Language Models (LLMs). These tools contribute to more structured, interconnected, and contextually aware management of terms and concepts within specific domains, enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of how terms are collected, organized, and maintained.'

Literaire Vertaaldagen 2025

vrijdag, 20 juni 2025 - zaterdag, 21 juni 2025
Amsterdam

11th European Society for Translation Studies (EST) Congress: The Changing Faces of Translation and Interpreting Studies

maandag, 30 juni 2025 - donderdag, 03 juli 2025
Leeds
The ever-changing landscape of the translation and interpreting industry and academic research has led in the past 10 years to translation taking place in different places, platforms and modalities.
It has also led to a shift in the profile of the modern translator and interpreter, who are now expected to work in different domains, with different tools, and according to different workflows.
Academic research in translation and interpreting studies has also taken on different faces with a multiplication of different areas, tools, methodologies.
This has strengthened our understanding of translation and interpreting phenomena in all their complexity, but this has also caused a proliferation of discourses about translation and interpreting that do not always coincide or align with those of the industry.

'In this Congress we aim to take stock of these different faces and discourses by sharing different needs and expectations, contrasting conceptual understandings of what translation and interpreting are, and reflecting on potential roles and opportunities for collaboration. The Congress will offer a fruitful forum for dialogue and collaboration between academics from different areas as well as stakeholders from across the industry.'

For more information, visit the EST Congress website.
