This workshop brings together scholars, practitioners, NGOs, and industry professionals to explore how NLP can be leveraged to address ecological challenges.

NLP applications include analyzing language across media, political discourse, and social platforms regarding climate change, biodiversity loss, and other environmental concerns, from plastic pollution to the fast fashion industry.
It also involves identifying harmful language use, such as anthropocentric or speciesist biases, that contribute to detrimental attitudes and behaviors toward the environment.
Conversely, NLP can also be used to detect and analyze positive discourse patterns that promote ecologically responsible behaviors.

'We aim to attract a highly interdisciplinary audience and welcome contributions at the intersection of linguistics, ecology, and computer science, particularly from fields such as AI, computational linguistics, digital humanities, ecolinguistics, ethics, philosophy, and environmental humanities. Our goal is to expand research and collaboration, empowering the NLP community to play an active role in mitigating the ecological crisis through innovative and collective action.'

Three mini-talks by terminology professionals who are investigating inclusivity in terminology, introduced by Elena Chiocchetti (Eurac Research) with a quick overview of the dimensions of terminology and inclusion and the role of terminologists.

Chantal Reid and Karine Rondeau from the Government of Canada’s Translation Bureau will set the scene against the background of the Canadian government’s commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility, including promoting inclusive language. 

Natascia Ralli of Eurac Research and Elisabeth Evers of University of Hildesheim will focus on gender-inclusive agentives in terminology databases. 

Michal Měchura of Fiontar & Scoil na Gaeilge in Dublin City University will discuss the options that exist – or could exist – in terminology management systems for storing and representing inclusivity-sensitive terminology.

The 4th CTER Congress will be held with the aim to explore human added value and new, emerging concepts of translation in an age of a technology-driven global LSP industry offering largely outsourced, time-saving and cost-effective language services involving a wide spectrum of forms and types of translation.

Paradoxically, and contrary to numerous voices of concern, the increasing automation of translation processes seems to be foregrounding the need for (re-)positioning human language mediators to maximise their value-adding potential which manifests itself in the now largely desired transferable, adaptive, (inter-)personal service-provision skills which are necessary for effective interaction not only with the stakeholders in the LSP industry but also the relevant technologies, e.g. AI.

This congress, addressed to specialists from the field of Translation Studies and Translation Pedagogy and professional translators, creates an opportunity to examine the current state of affairs in the field, both on a theoretical and practical plane, reflect on the relevant research findings and share inspirations with a view to providing an interface between translator education and the translation profession.

Linguapodium brengt jonge talenten uit de Euregio Maas-Rijn samen om hun vreemdetalenkennis te tonen in toneelstukken, liedjes en andere creatieve bijdragen in het Frans, Duits, Nederlands of Engels.

Die Tagung verfolgt einerseits das Ziel, zentrale Ergebnisse des DFG-Projekts „Sprache in Verschwörungstheorien“ der Fachcommunity zu präsentieren und zur Diskussion zu stellen.
Andererseits soll die inzwischen facettenreiche sprachwissenschaftliche Forschung zum Thema gebündelt und in ihrer theoretischen wie methodisch-empirischen Vielfalt sichtbar gemacht werden.

Ziel des DFG-Projektes ist es, in verschiedenen Diskursen (z. B. über Terrorismus, Rechtspopulismus, Klimawandel, Covid-19) vergleichend zu untersuchen, wie Verschwörungstheorien durch den Gebrauch von Sprache und den Einsatz bestimmter sprachlicher Mittel als soziale Wirklichkeit konstruiert werden.

We bieden inspiratie uit de praktijk met op maat gemaakte taalhulpmiddelen. Daarbij laten we zien hoe dergelijke taalhulpmiddelen in andere organisaties of bij lokale besturen zijn ontwikkeld. Via een oefening gaan we in de sessie zelf al van start met de uitwerking van een concreet taalhulpmiddel.'

The European Language Industry Survey (ELIS) is an annual collaborative initiative in which the international associations EUATC (initiator and lead association), Elia, FIT Europe, GALA, and Women in Localization as well as the EMT university network and DGT’s LIND Expert Group work together to identify the current and future trends in the industry, as well as the concerns and expectations of their respective audiences which cover the widest range of key stakeholders in the European language industry.

A digital event will be organised on March 18th, 2025 as a Translating Europe Workshop to formally present the analysis of the survey’s results.

Tijdens deze workshop maak je kennis met tools voor tekstherkenning in gedrukte tekst (OCR) en handgeschreven tekst (HTR).
Zowel traditionele benaderingen (zoals Tesseract-OCR) als recente AI-innovaties (zoals TrOCR en Qwen-2-VL-Instruct) komen hierbij uitgebreid aan bod.

Daarna leer je hoe je gescande documenten omzet in bruikbare tekst met Tesseract-OCR. Je komt bovendien te weten hoe je de gegenereerde tekst verwerkt en welke voorbereidingen je moet treffen voor beeldoptimalisatie. Zo kan je de nauwkeurigheid en bruikbaarheid van je resultaten optimaliseren.

Het Institut français des Pays-Bas en Platform Frans organiseren op 21 maart een themamiddag over vertalen in de Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam.

Dit derde evenement in de serie ‘La Fabrique de la traduction littéraire’ start met een workshop literair vertalen door Kiki Coumans.

Vervolgens gaan een aantal deskundigen, waaronder Ana Guerberof en Francis Mus, in gesprek over actuele ontwikkelingen rond literair vertalen, in het bijzonder de opkomst van kunstmatige intelligentie.

Maaike Koffeman leidt een panelgesprek over naar de institutionele contexten waarin vertalers in Frankrijk en Nederland opereren, met bijdragen van vertalers Eva Wissenburg en Mireille Cohendy, Francis Mus, Pascale Fila (Institut Français NL) en Hanna Barral (Institut Français Paris).

With growing discussion on the impacts of vicarious trauma on interpreters who are exposed to traumatic speaker content, conference interpreter Dylan O'Reilly looks at how these assignments can affect interpereters in other ways also. Drawing on the results of his mixed methods study and existing literature on the topic, he will discuss the following:

• Vicarious trauma, how it manifests in interpreters and what puts us at risk of experiencing it
• Secondary traumatic stress in interpreters
• Burnout in interpreters

Unter dem Motto „Terminologie in der KI – KI in der Terminologie“ werden verschiedenste Fragestellungen rund um dieses Thema behandelt. • Terminologiearbeit für die NMÜ (aktualisierte Wiederholung des erfolgreichen Tutoriums von 2023)

Die Fachvorträge beleuchten – aus Unternehmens-, Dienstleistungs- oder akademischer Perspektive – die Bedeutung von Terminologie und KI in unterschiedlichen Kontexten und Anwendungsgebieten, wie z. 'Veel steden en gemeenten in het Nederlandse taalgebied worden gekenmerkt door een grote taaldiversiteit. Inwoners spreken Nederlands op verschillende manieren en niveaus, en daarnaast zijn er vele andere talen dagelijks in gebruik. Met actieplannen en taalaanpakken bevorderen steden en gemeenten de ontwikkeling van de Nederlandse taal om te zorgen dat iedereen kan meedoen, leren en werken.'

De Taalunie organiseert samen met het Drongo platform voor meertaligheid twee inspiratiebijeenkomsten over verbindend taalbeleid voor het Nederlands in Nederland en Vlaanderen. 

'Tijdens deze bijeenkomsten delen we kennis over lokale aanpakken uit Nederland en Vlaanderen. We reflecteren op verschillende strategieën en praktijken om in linguïstisch diverse contexten communicatie, participatie en ontwikkeling te bevorderen.

Negen Nederlandse en Vlaamse literair vertalers van de nieuwe generatie praten op het Passa Porta Festival over hun werk en recente ontdekkingen dankzij het Europese talentontwikkelingsproject CELA. (CELA, Connecting Emerging Literary Artists, is een Europees project dat auteurs, vertalers en literaire professionals uit elf landen met elkaar verbindt en nieuwe kansen biedt.)
