Jente Nuitten, Gent - Op 5 mei 2018 vindt in Brussel de zesde editie van de jaarlijkse BELTA Day plaats. BELTA is de Belgian English Language Teachers Association.
Dit jaar is het thema "Defining Language and Fluency In a Global Context". Welk Engels moeten onze leerlingen eigenlijk vlot leren spreken en schrijven? En wat bedoelen we met "vlot"?
De plenaire gastspreker is Scott Thornbury.
Tegenwoordig moeten leraren Engels hun leerlingen klaarstomen om Engels te gebruiken in een mondiale context. "As we move from teaching in very regional and national settings to preparing our students to work in a Global English context, it is critical that we re-examine our beliefs about language and fluency."
BELTA Day bestaat voornamelijk uit de plenaire openings- en slotsessie van Scott Thornbury en een twintigtal praktische workshops voor leraren, docenten en taaltrainers Engels, waarin de sprekers het zullen hebben over technologie, literatuur, gebruik van films, taken en feedback tijdens de les etc.
Scott Thornbury
De plenaire gastspreker is Scott Thornbury. Hij is een autoriteit op het vlak van ELT (English Language Teaching). Hij heeft dertig jaar ervaring als docent en train-the-trainer Engels. Hij is auteur en redacteur van een hele reeks leerboeken.
Scott Thornbury opent de BELTA Day dit jaar met een lezing “Is language a countable noun?”
“In this talk I will problematize the notion of language, and argue that many of the decisions that we take for granted (e.g. what to teach, what to correct, what language to use in the classroom) have strong ideological underpinnings.”
Zijn plenaire slotlezing gaat over vlotheid: “Fluency and how to achieve it”.
“Fluency is a slippery concept: we think we know it when we hear it, but we have a lot of trouble trying to define it. And even more trouble trying to teach it!”

Expo
Parallel met de conferentie loopt tijdens de BELTA Day een expo met educatieve uitgevers, organisaties en bedrijven die de geïnteresseerde docent Engels van alles te bieden hebben.
